Por vs. Para: A Clear Guide for Beginners

The prepositions por and para are notorious among Spanish learners because they both frequently translate to the English word “for”.

Many textbooks provide long, confusing lists of rules for each. Instead of memorizing 15 different rules, let’s look at the core concept of each word.

Para: The Arrow (Destination and Purpose)

Think of para as an arrow pointing forward towards a destination, a recipient, a deadline, or a goal.

  1. Recipient (pointing to a person):
    • Este regalo es para ti. (This gift is for you.)
  2. Destination (pointing to a place):
    • Salimos para Madrid mañana. (We are leaving for Madrid tomorrow.)
  3. Deadline (pointing to a time):
    • La tarea es para el lunes. (The homework is for Monday.)
  4. Goal/Purpose (pointing to an objective - “in order to”):
    • Estudio español para viajar. (I study Spanish in order to travel.)

Por: The Path (Movement, Cause, and Exchange)

Think of por as a path, a reason looking backward, an exchange, or movement through something.

  1. Movement through/along/by:
    • Caminamos por el parque. (We walk through/by the park.)
  2. Cause/Reason (looking backward at why something happened):
    • No fui al trabajo por la lluvia. (I didn’t go to work because of the rain.)
  3. Exchange/Price:
    • Pagué diez dólares por el libro. (I paid ten dollars for the book.)
  4. Duration of time (moving through time):
    • Estudié por dos horas. (I studied for two hours.)
  5. Means of communication/transportation:
    • Te llamo por teléfono. (I’ll call you by phone.)

The “For” Trap

When you want to say “for”, stop and ask yourself:

  • Am I talking about a destination/recipient/goal? -> Para
  • Am I talking about a cause/exchange/movement through? -> Por
